Planning for 2025 Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation

Get ready to celebrate! Staff Appreciation Week is just around the corner, taking place May 5th through 9th. Our wonderful Key Center School PTA has some fantastic activities and treats planned to show our incredible Key Center Staff how much we value their dedication. To make this week truly special, the PTA is inviting families to contribute in one of two ways:

  1. Effortless Support via Givebacks Store: Make a financial donation through the PTA's Givebacks Store website, and let the PTA handle the shopping for staff goodies!
  2. Share Your Delicious Treats: Contribute sweet or savory treats to be enjoyed by staff throughout the week. Donations can be dropped off at the school on Monday, May 5th, through Thursday, May 7th.

Schedule for the Week:

Monday, May 5th- Fuel our staff’s awesomeness! Now through Thursday morning- send in some treats for our staff to enjoy.

Tuesday, May 6th- Let your creativity bloom! Bring a heartfelt thank you card, note, or piece of artwork to brighten their day.

Wednesday, May 7th- A little bud for a big impact! Please bring a single flower from your garden to show your appreciation.

Thursday, May 8th- Let's help keep all of our learning spaces sparkly clean! Please send in some cleaning wipes or facial tissues for the classroom.

Friday, May 9th- Paint the town (and our school!) red! Wear RED to show your love for our teachers.

Your generosity will make a real difference in celebrating our amazing Key Center Staff. Thank you for considering supporting this important effort!

School Lunch Hero Day

This Friday, May 2nd, is School Lunch Hero Day!  We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the dedication and hard work of our cafeteria helpers, Sonia and Kadija. From preparing nutritious meals to ensuring dietary needs are met, our lunch heroes go above and beyond to create a positive dining experience for all. Their smiles and encouragement brighten our students' days, fostering a welcoming atmosphere in the cafeteria.

National Speech-Language-Hearing Month

katie and amee

May is here, and with it comes an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our speech therapists, Katie Huynh and Aimee Rand. As we observe National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, we want to extend our gratitude to Aimee and Katie for their dedication in providing exceptional speech services to our students.  They play a pivotal role in helping our students develop essential communication skills, empowering them to express themselves and better navigate the world around them.

Racheel and Sheila

During National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, we also want to express our appreciation to two valuable members of our school team: Teacher of the Hearing Impaired, Rachel Lee and Audiologist, Sheila Moore-Neff.  Rachel and Sheila work with our students with hearing impairments and their classroom teams to ensure that they are supported in accessing their environment and educational services.

Happy National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, and thank you for all that you do!

Protect Your Child from Measles: What You Need to Know

Immunization

Measles cases continue to rise in the U.S. About 1 in 5 people who get measles end up in the hospital. Measles can cause severe complications like a lung infection (pneumonia), brain inflammation (encephalitis), and possibly death, even with medical care. Symptoms of measles typically include:

  • High fever (may spike up to 104°F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • A rash that appears around 3-5 days after other symptoms begin. The rash typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

The best way to protect a child from measles is by getting two doses of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

If you are unsure of your child's vaccination status or your personal vaccination status, talk to your health care provider. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your health care provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources.

School Health Survey

survey

Share Feedback With County Health Department on School Health Services
The Fairfax County Health Department and Fairfax County Public Schools School Health Services invite parents/caregivers of FCPS students to participate in a survey on satisfaction with school health room services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open until Monday, May 5.

School health rooms (clinics) are managed by public health nurses and school health aides. Those staff provide care for students who become sick or injured during the school day, who require medications during the school day, and/or who have a chronic health condition that requires management during the school day.

Additionally, the school health room staff:

  • Provide health education, communicable disease prevention, and health screenings.
  • Work with schools to help address the root causes of population health disparities so that all students have equitable access to educational and health opportunities.
  • Ensure that students have care for minor injuries and illnesses, and chronic health conditions, thus helping to minimize health barriers to learning.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of school health room services as well as inform future planning for schools.
