A decline in first-quarter gross domestic product and a costly tariff experiment are making President Donald Trump so unpopular that voters now regret choosing him over Kamala Harris. Just kidding—polling hasn’t gotten that bad for the White House yet. But today’s GDP report should serve as a warning that the economy needs tariffs to be lower, not higher—ideally at a rate of zero. As for the Democrats, it must be endlessly frustrating to suffer from low public esteem even as public support declines for Mr. Trump. One survey suggests that former Vice President Harris might be an even less competitive candidate now than she was in November. Emerson College reports today: Voters who participated in the 2024 election were asked how they would vote if they could go back in time to the 2024 election, knowing what they know now: 93% of Harris voters and 94% of Trump voters would still vote for the candidate they voted for in 2024, giving Trump a 48% to 47% advantage. It’s just one survey, but as Ingrid Jacques notes at
USA Today, Emerson isn’t the only organization that has struggled to detect evidence of Americans wishing for a do-over on the Trump-Harris choice. Regarding the original Democratic plan for this presidential term, one wonders if pollsters could even manage to find any Americans today who believe that Joe Biden could capably serve as president for the next four years. Still, even if Americans remain comfortable in their decision not to give Kamala Harris the promotion she sought last year, don’t be surprised if Thursday brings media headlines about her allegedly passionate and forceful return to the national stage. Nothing sets media hearts aflutter like an undistinguished politician launching an over-the-top condemnation of Donald Trump.
