If you have kids in school like me, or even if you don’t, you’ve probably heard the latest regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in classrooms. A few weeks ago, the Trump administration demanded that certain DEI programs be removed from public schools or they’d lose federal funding. In response, as of today, 19 states are suing the administration, claiming the demand is illegal.
Teaching about race and identity in classrooms has been a battle for decades. From debates over critical race theory to banned books and providing safe spaces for the LGBTQ community, the fights often take place among the school boards, with parents passionately pleading their case. While living in suburban Texas, his family experienced racial terrorism right in front of their own home. And as an investigative reporter for NBC News, the experience led him to dig deeper to find out what was going on in these suburban school systems.
