For 577 days, stretching from the end of the 2023 season until Wednesday night, Lucas Giolito ached for what he did not have.
Heralded as one of the most durable starters in baseball when he signed a two-year deal with the Red Sox following the 2023 campaign, Giolito missed all of 2024 while recovering from elbow surgery and the first month of 2025 while working his way back from a spring training hamstring strain. Unable to pitch, the righthander longed for the highest level of competition.
On Wednesday night, in a 7-6 Red Sox walkoff loss to the Blue Jays, Giolito received a reminder of the full spectrum offered by his profession — the elation of success, and the nausea of an apparent victory turned into defeat. The Red Sox blew a 6-0 lead, the six-run meltdown representing their most dramatic fumble in an eventual loss since May 27, 2022.
