Dear Theater Fans, The dust is settling on this year’s Tony Award nominations, which were announced this morning. Records were broken (congrats, Audra!), history was made (Daniel Dae Kim is the first Asian American nominee for leading actor in a play) and some starry performances (Denzel, Jake and Idina) were overlooked. But one thing is certain: The Tony nominators do a pretty good job of recognizing a wide range of shows. Of the 42 eligible productions, 29 received nominations. And how nice was it to see that so many of the fall productions, so often forgotten in the spring rush, made a strong showing? Ensembles as well. If you’re just catching up or want to go deeper, our team has you covered. Here are the main takeaways: - “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her” and “Maybe Happy Ending” — all musicals — received the most nominations, tying for 10 each.
- George Clooney, Sadie Sink, Bob Odenkirk and Sarah Snook are among the celebrities who received nominations.
- “English,” Sanaz Toossi’s Pulitzer Prize winner, is among the best play contenders, along with Kimberly Belflower’s “John Proctor Is the Villain,” Cole Escola’s “Oh, Mary!,” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s “Purpose” and Jez Butterworth’s “The Hills of California.”

Michael Paulson has that news, notable takeaways and so much more; Rachel Sherman and others compiled the nominations list; and Jesse Green, Alexis Soloski and Scott Heller weighed in with snubs and surprises. What’s next? The Tony Awards ceremony will take place on June 8, and this year’s host is Cynthia Erivo, a Tony winner for “The Color Purple” and a star of the “Wicked” films. A preshow, when many of the design awards are given, will be streamed on Paramount+, while the main event, at which the best productions and performers are announced, will be broadcast on CBS, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
