The best gifts we bought for ourselves in April

The items your newsletter editors bought in April.
NYT Wirecutter, Day Rate Beauty

What have Wirecutter journalists been up to lately? Well, our resident board-game experts played hundreds of games to find the very best ones, our so-called “Chief Quince Investigator” spent a month dressed head-to-toe in the trendy brand, and our style senior staff writer overhauled our guide to the best pajamas with eight new favorites. Not to mention the plethora of other rabbit holes we explored — including asking chefs for their favorite shoes, hunting down the best buy-it-for-life items, and investigating a hack involving … nipple cream.

As for us, your newsletter editors? Below is a smattering of the Wirecutter recommendations that made it into — and significantly improved — our lives last month:

  • “I’m incredibly picky when it comes to pens: I find most ballpoints too dry and gels too wet. And I have a strict zero-tolerance policy for skipping and bleeding. Happy to report that these fineliner pens are a dream come true. The ink comes out rich and saturated but it dries into a pleasant matte that looks quite nice scribbled all over my beloved Leuchtturm planner.— Brittney
  • “I had what we like to call ‘the shoppies’ in April and found myself extremely influenced by my (brilliant) co-workers. First, staff writer Hannah Frye convinced me to get this lightweight, ’80s-style J.Crew sweater. I’ve been wearing my oversized navy one with wide white pants and brown loafers and feeling like Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give. Then, style editor Ingela Ratledge Amundson, a fellow tall girl, promised these barrel jeans wouldn’t make me look like an Oompa-Loompa, and you know what, she was right. They are extremely cute. I also finally listened to what editor Hannah Morrill has been saying for a while now: This sleek little gold hair pin is life-changing. Truly.” — Sofia
  • “The best part of owning a pet water fountain is that I don’t find my cat, Atlas, desperately licking the droplets from the bathroom faucet anymore. The worst part is that most tend to be an eyesore and are an absolute pain to clean. So far, this surprisingly attractive pet water fountain has solved this conundrum for me. It has a sleek and minimalist design, is easy to clean, and the water pump is so quiet I almost forget it’s there. — Isoke
  • “I’m moving in with my boyfriend this month, so I did something borderline cringe and scooped up Wirecutter’s top-pick instant camera to capture all the hectic memories of our move-in — I’m thinking cute pics of eating takeout on the floor. And today, as I am faced with the harsh reality that is our new, quite ugly bathroom flooring, I’m doing some renter-friendly peel-and-stick tile research. — Haley

And some prepared their outdoor spaces for alfresco outings with pressure washers, lawn mowers, and more. All sounds like fun.
