Dear Parents,
As we end the year, we have provided a few reminders and updates in order to support a fulfilling summer and planning for the next school year.
- Summer Resources for reading and math detailed in the section below, let us know how we can support!
- Sign up for band or strings and/or chorus for the next school year. See the detailed info. below for additional information. Typically, we have close to 100% participation for rising 4th graders and 5th and 6th!
- Three Hour Early Release dates detailed below to mark your calendar and plan forward.
- School Supply links available below for the next school year - thanks to our PTA.
- Bookmark the 2025-26 school year calendar to be ready for next year.
- Rising 7th graders - make sure you have signed up for Jump Start at Longfellow and check out the information below for your celebration.
- New Kinder playdate on Saturday, June 21st, 9 - 11 a.m. - the school will be closed but please enjoy meeting new friends!
Thanks to our parents who provided feedback regarding our school focus. #kgpride remains deeply embedded in our school character and spirit - we will continue to reflect and think forward on how best to support our students not only academically but also for the social emotional development. We will be releasing our scores (impressive!) and our school vision/plans in the next month.
Once again, we thank ALL of our parents and our students for a wonderful year! Enjoy the summer break!

Summer Reading and More
FCPS Resources: Parents can find activities to support reading and writing in FCPS’ Summer Learning Resources webpage. All of these activities are optional, but we encourage families to help their students practice reading and writing during summer break, so that they can start strong next school year. Other FCPS resources include the Summer Resource Guide, and Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Program
KGES Tools/Platforms: Other language arts tools that are available include PebbleGo and MyOn - Check out these and other resources on the KGES Library Page - through our website. In addition, two Benchmark units are available - your child should login through Clever - Please ensure your child is using their account.
Math platforms available include ST Math. Access directions here.
Should you require technology support, please complete an IT support Request form. We will communicate how to access and availability of laptops in the next newsletter.
Students may use their home device to access the activities through the links above. However, if students in grades K-6 require a laptop, you may complete a check out form request prior to June 18. Laptops will need to be returned by June 30th,
Required Immunizations ~ Rising 7 and 12 Graders
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades:
- All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations before the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age seven or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide not to have your child receive the HPV vaccination. If that is the case, the school does not require documentation.
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) before the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.

Strings Sign Up 2025-26!
Calling all rising fourth graders - strings sign up is available here. Note that the majority of our 4th graders sign up for strings - it is a great experience! You can still sign up even if you are unsure which strings instrument you would like to play!
The rising 5th and 6th graders can also sign up here. Dr. Tai and Mr. Funderburk are available for questions as well!

Band Sign Up for 2025 - 26!
Rising fifth and sixth graders may sign up for band! If your child is uncertain which instrument he/she wants to play, there will be opportunities to try out various instruments at the start of school. We would prefer that you sign up now so we can plan ahead!
Mr. Zimmerman and Ms. Parrell are looking forward to an amazing year! You may sign up now for the next school year.

Fifth and Sixth Grade Chorus - Sign Up Now!
Our rising 5th graders and rising sixth graders may sign up for chorus! The practice is in the morning at 8:30 or when child arrives. Chorus does not conflict with band/strings and rising 5th and 6th graders can participate in chorus and band or chorus and strings. Ms. Paik and Ms. Lee are available for questions and inquiries!We look forward to an amazing school year!

Summer Meals for Students - FCPS’ Program provides breakfast and lunch free of charge to all children ages 18 and younger. Check out Food and Nutrition Services webpage and the USDA Meals Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder in mid-June for specific dates, times and locations. Learning Doesn’t Take a Vacation — and Neither Does Fun! FCPS’ Summer Learning webpage offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until August. Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce concepts, and stay engaged!
County-Wide Awareness Campaigns - Stay in the know! There are many county departments and initiatives with e-newsletters. Take a look and sign up for the ones that interest you. You can enter your email address and receive them automatically.
Behavioral Health and Trauma Awareness Mental Health Services/Resources for Children and Families – The guide was put together by several Neighborhood School Readiness Project NSRP teams and is posted on the Fairfax Prevention Coalition website.
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Updates
At their May 8 meeting, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the SR&R, including its cell phone policy. Other SR&R updates include added clarity and/or procedures around topics such as discipline data, parent notifications, hate speech, and integrated discipline training. Early Release Wednesdays - 2025 Calendar
During a report to the School Board this past month, FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, announced plans to continue limited early release days in elementary schools and shift from Mondays to Wednesdays for the 2025-26 school year. Rising Kinder Playdates
