My column for PS Quarterly’s special “Post Americana” edition argues that President Trump’s multi-pronged attack on the multilateral trading system, abetted by China’s destructive and relentlessly rising mercantilism, is likely to fatally undermine the wider postwar liberal political order. A dangerous period of Hobbesian each-against-all disorder seems inevitable.
