While most of you commiserated with my crankiness over celebrities writing kids books, some of you wrote in recommending the good ones. Here’s what you had to say.
Monica S. wrote: “My 7-year-old daughter recently picked Kristi Yamaguchi’s book Cara’s Kindness as one of five books to be sent to her over the summer for her to read. My daughter hates reading and generally does everything she can to avoid me when I suggest it. Surprisingly this one book, whether it was the illustrations or Kristi’s ‘hook’ was the one book that she sat and read with me right away and has commented since about. Definitely surprised me as I had not known Kristi as a writer. Even though people may achieve celebrity in one field, though, can they not have some talent in another field, perhaps being open to teaching and allow their name to bring awareness to important lessons?”
Isobella J. wrote: “I’ve loved reading to my daughter River Rose and the Magical Lullaby by Grammy Award-winning Kelly Clarkson. It's sweet that the story includes a lullaby, which I sang in the book to my little girl while reading the story. The book comes with a link to listen to the original song performed by Kelly, too. The illustrations are colorful and adorable, and a cute gift for a baby shower or a child’s birthday. I think when celebrities produce children's books and there's an interactive element or something unique like Kelly's, it's special and I'm all for it!”
Vicki K. wrote: “Elementary school librarian here and I hope I am not the first to mention B.J. Novak's book The Book with No Pictures. It is hands-down one of the BEST books to read out loud to children of just about any age. Genius.”
See you next week!
