Stop me if this sounds familiar: You’re applying for a new job. You’ve done three rounds of interviews and presented a case study. The recruiter finally asks, “What are your salary expectations?”... and now you’re getting ghosted.
Here’s the good news: By the end of the year, 14 states plus Washington, DC will require pay transparency from employers. (Check here to see if yours is one of them.) The laws vary, but generally companies will have to disclose the hourly wage, salary or salary range, and a detailed breakdown of the benefits that come with a job posting.
The bad news? Lots of employers have a bananas interpretation of the word “range.” And, if you think you’re on the high end, you might want to check the data first.
Meaning, as always, it’s on us to make sure we’re getting paid what we’re worth. Here’s how:
Backchannel. Ask friends of friends in the industry what salary makes sense for the job. Real people >>> outdated internet estimates. But, don’t sleep on online communities built to empower job seekers. We’re big fans of this one.
Think beyond base pay. If the number isn’t what you want, remember that hiring managers can often bridge the gap by adding in high-value perks like these.
Part of being money smart is knowing what’s worth the spend.
Our commerce team tests it all — so you only see the picks that deserve your time and your budget. And because everyone spends differently, we pick three different price points to help you find what works best for you.
This week, we’re meal prepping. From solo dinners to family feasts, we found the best air fryers to cut down on your kitchen time — and your Uber Eats bill.
Never got an Easy-Bake Oven as a kid? Redemption arc unlocked. This mini wonder can air fry, bake, roast, toast, reheat, and broil. Our commerce team swears by its multifunctionality, and Our Place has a track record of making gear that actually lasts.
The Marvel movie of air fryers. It’s the go-to, pretty much universally loved, and priced right. With a 5-quart capacity, it’s roomy enough for two to three people, but won’t eat up your entire countertop.
Think of this as a “one and done” solution at a great price point.Six quarts, 12 buttons, and zero excuses to order takeout.
