America’s vigilantes
Crimes and impunity in the U.S. Army Special Forces
The New York Times Magazine
October 5, 2025

This week’s cover story on the U.S. Army Special Forces — one of the rare stories to which the magazine has dedicated an entire print issue — draws on more than a decade of work by Matthieu Aikins and Victor J. Blue. The two have been working together for nearly as long in Afghanistan. The four-part investigation looks at the culture of impunity in the Special Forces that has its roots in the 20-year conflict in Afghanistan, where the details of alleged war crimes were shrouded in secrecy. These coverups have paved the way for an era of unrestrained military aggression and vigilantism now championed by President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

They Celebrated Vigilante Justice on the Battlefield. Then They Brought It Home.

Pete Hegseth’s advocacy for service members accused of war crimes, and Trump’s pardons of them, have helped usher in an era of military aggression and disregard for the rule of law.
