Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings SoCo family,

As we begin to wind down the first marking period, I want to take a moment to celebrate the hard work, growth, and school pride we’ve seen across our halls these past few weeks. This time of year can bring excitement and pressure, so it’s important for our students to prioritize balance—getting rest, connecting with friends, and seeking support when needed. Together, let’s continue fostering a culture of positivity, resilience, and care for one another. Keep pushing, stay focused, and remember: when we take care of our minds and each other, we stand strong!

Spotlight on Stallions

Last week’s talent show lit up the auditorium with incredible performances that proved our Stallions don’t just run—they shine! From singing to playing instrumental music, every act brought something special to the stage, and our students in the audience cheered with pride for every single classmate. It was heartwarming to see such genuine encouragement and school spirit lift our performers higher. With support like that, you could say the energy in the room was truly show-stopping!

We’re incredibly proud of how they compete, lead, and inspire—on and off the field. Way to go, Matea, Trevion, Ritesh, and Abby!

High Quality Instruction

History Under Open Skies Students in Mr. Kingston’s AP U.S. History class stepped into our new outdoor classroom like explorers navigating the early currents of revolution, engaging in a thoughtful Socratic discussion on the causes of the American Revolution and ranking them by significance. Conversations flowed like rivers of ideas, connecting perspectives across the circle. Afterward, students channeled their insight into a written response to a short answer question on the events that sparked America’s first steps toward independence.

School Culture

Echoes of the First Voices: Honoring Native American Heritage Month

During the month of November, people across the United States pause to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, recognizing the rich histories, cultures, and wisdom of Indigenous communities. It’s a time to uplift the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions that have shaped — and continue to shape — our nation and world. Most importantly, students deserve meaningful, ongoing opportunities to learn from and engage with Indigenous stories year-round. To support this important work, FCPS has provided our Social Studies teachers with resources to help students learn about and celebrate Native American heritage.

Valiant Veterans Celebration Students can sign-up now in our cafeteria to attend our2025 Veterans Day event on November 5 from 10:15-11:15 in the Auditorium. We look forward to honoring those who have served with a variety of vibrant activities. Enjoy a wonderful rendition of America the Beautiful, a captivating video on the history of Veteran’s Day, and heartfelt stories from students and adults sharing their military experiences. With respect, remembrance, and remarkable school spirit, this celebration promises to be both inspiring and unforgettable!

Coach's Corner:

In today's connected world, our instruction this week includes a focus on responsible digital citizenship. At home, you can reinforce these lessons by discussing online safety, respectful communication, and responsible use of technology. Talk about the importance of being kind and thoughtful in online interactions, just as we are in person. This shared responsibility helps create a safer and more positive digital environment for everyone.

With all of these wonderful memories from the last week, it’s easy to see why students and staff alike know, … we’re not just SoCo, we’re SoCool!

AP Opt-Out forms are Due to Student Services by October 31

As part of the FCPS Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. FCPS encourages all students to take AP/IB tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the test(s) by filling out an AP Opt-Out form to be provided by the school. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP/IB course enrollment.

AP Opt-Out forms were distributed via Advisory starting on Wednesday, October 1. If your student has not received their AP Opt-Out form yet, please have them see their Advisory teacher. More information can be found on the SCHS AP Testing web page. If a student exceeds their six exams paid for by FCPS, they will be billed a $99 nonrefundable fee for each AP exam and $124 nonrefundable fee for each IB exam. If a student does not opt out by October 31st, and does not sit for the exam, exam fees are nonrefundable. Additional information on FCPS AP/IB exam fee policies can be found on our website. Please contact Chris Bird, AP Test Coordinator, at cwbird@fcps.edu if you have further questions.
