Good afternoon, Lorton Station families!
Next week is the end of the first quarter, and you should have received a message from your teacher(s) regarding scheduling a meeting to review your child's progress and ways you can support them at home to reach their full potential. As you come into the conference, here are a few questions that can guide your thoughts:
- What skills will my child be expected to master this year? Especially in subjects like math, English, science, and history?
- What is my child like in class?
- Is my child performing to their ability?
- Are there common errors my child makes while reading, writing, or spelling?
- Are there common math errors that my child is making?
- How can I support my child’s learning at home?
A Parent-Teacher Conference is essential for building a strong school-home partnership and for greater communication and support for your child throughout the school year.
Quick highlights:
- Children's Science Night on Tuesday
- End of 1st Quarter on Friday
- Early Release on Friday at 2 PM
Helpful reminders:
- Attendance is crucial to your child's successful academic progress. A child who misses 10% or more of the school year is more likely to be one or more grade levels below their peers in reading and math.
- Math homework is a practice tool that helps students reinforce current content. If your child is struggling with their math homework, don't hesitate to get in touch with your child's teacher for support.
- Twenty minutes of reading a night can improve your child's reading ability by more than a grade level by the end of the school year.

Fairfax County Youth Survey on Physical and Mental Well-Being
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The survey is given each fall to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. It provides information about a variety of topics related to our students that influence their physical and mental well-being, from sleep, physical activity, and nutritional habits to protective factors, substance use behaviors, and symptoms of depression.
The 2025 Fairfax County Youth Survey will be taken by students between Monday, November 10, and Friday, November 21. Parents and caregivers can opt their student out of participating in the survey if they so choose.
Visit the Fairfax County Youth Survey webpage for more information and to review the opt-out forms.
✨ Providing students with access to the necessary emotional, behavioral, mental, and physical health services to support their successful engagement in school is part of the FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.
