Housing Vacancies and Homeownership

 Homeownership Rate

3rd Qtr 2025: 65.3*

3rd Qtr 2024: 65.6

The homeownership rate of 65.3 percent was not statistically different from the rate in the third quarter 2024 (65.6 percent). Compared to the third quarter 2024, the third quarter 2025 homeownership rate was lower in the Midwest and not statistically different in the Northeast, South, and West.

Rental Vacancy Rate

3rd Qtr 2025: 7.1*

3rd Qtr 2024: 6.9

The rental vacancy rate of 7.1 percent was not statistically different from the rate in the third quarter 2024 (6.9 percent). Compared to the third quarter 2024, the third quarter 2025 rental vacancy rate was higher in the South and not statistically different in the Northeast, Midwest, and West.

(°) Statistical significance is not applicable or not measurable for these surveys. The Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders estimates are not based on a probability sample, so we can neither measure the sampling error of these estimates nor compute confidence intervals. (r) Revised. All estimates are seasonally adjusted except for the Rental Vacancy Rate, Home Ownership Rate, Quarterly Financial Report for Retail Trade, and Quarterly Services Survey. None of the estimates are adjusted for price changes.
