How is President Donald Trump preparing for the World Economic Forum in Davos this week? By antagonizing allies with asinine Greenland memes and threatening a 200 percent tariff on French wine after President Emmanuel Macron declined Trump’s offer to join his “Board of Peace” in Gaza.
So it comes as a great relief to see world leaders finally pushing back with a bit more heft. Here’s Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney this morning from Switzerland:
“Canadians know that our old, comfortable assumption that our geography and alliance memberships automatically conferred prosperity and security is no longer valid,” Carney said, later adding: “The old order is not coming back. We should not mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy. But from the fracture, we can build something better, stronger, and more just.”
Although he called out “American hegemony,” Carney declined to name Trump directly. But the message was clear. And it reminded me a helluva lot of my recent conversation with political scientist Abe Newman about our disintegrating world order and what Trump is actively seeking to replace it with.
