We live in an anxious age. For some, anxiety is an epigenetic legacy, for others it's a situational experience that rises and falls with circumstances. Since the 2020 election, political anxiety has emerged as a common source of stress as well. |

In an interview with CT's Clarissa Moll, author Sara Billups considers what Christians can do with anxiety, which, she says, "is not something we that we want to eradicate." Anxiety, Billups explains, can prompt deep empathy, the desire to connect, and creative thinking. It's when "anxiety's volume goes up too high" that problems arise.
One framework Billups offers for thinking about anxiety is the idea of holy indifference. By fixing our attention on God's goodness, regardless of outcomes, we release the need to win. "It helps us relax from striving and be honest," Billups says.
Whether we find our anxiety tied to politics or a host of others causes, the practice of holy indifference can help us find the calm we crave. As we allow God's work in our lives to position us in places of peace, may we find ourselves better equipped to pursue the good of others as well. |

More from christianity today |
|
When Jesus taught, he used parables. The kingdom of God is like yeast, a net, a pearl. Then and today, to grasp wisdom and spiritual insight, we need the concrete. We need stories. In this issue of Christianity Today, we focus on testimony—the stories we tell, hear, and proclaim about God’s redemptive work in the world. Testimony is a personal application of the Good News. You’ll read Marvin Olasky’s testimony from Communism to Christ, Jen Wilkin’s call to biblical literacy, and a profile on the friendship between theologian Miroslav Volf and poet Christian Wiman. In an essay on pickleball, David Zahl reminds us that play is also a testament to God’s grace. As you read, we hope you’ll apply the truths of the gospel in your own life, church, and neighborhood. May your life be a testimony to the reality of God’s kingdom. |
