The classic movie star is a dying breed in an era where franchises and IP rules. But Timothée Chalamet is building the case that he can carry the torch as a box office force unto himself. As our Jeremy Fuster notes in today's lead story, Chalamet has had three consecutive holiday stretches in which he's headlined a film that's surpassed expectation, with a clear sense that it's fans of Chalamet, and not the project, that's bringing people into theaters. It started in December 2023 with "Wonka," a film that legged out to continued success through January and garnered Chalamet his then-largest box office haul with $634 million. He broke it just a few months later with "Dune: Part Two," which made $715 million and turned the classic sci-fi book series into a blockbuster franchise. Then, at the end of 2024, Chalamet stepped into the biopic world as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” which earned $75 million domestically, the highest for any film released by Searchlight Pictures since it was acquired by Disney in 2019 by nearly double (closest was "The Menu" at $38.5 million.) But with December's release of "Marty Supreme," based on a real-life table tennis player that no one has ever heard of, proved that Chalamet's box office power is legit. With $80.8 million and counting, the film is already A24's highest-grossing movie. Just as notable is the critical response to his performance, with Chalamet also a frontrunner to win his first Academy Award. What's notable about the success of "Marty Supreme," Fuster notes, is how Chalamet "made 'Marty Supreme' synonymous with his own personal brand as an actor." As further indication of his ascendency, Paramount, which has for years banked on the "classic" star power of Cruise, is hoping some of that Chalamet magic rubs off with their upcoming project with director James Mangold.
