Salt prematurely ages vehicles, roads, and bridges and degrades our freshwater lakes, streams, and drinking water. Just a teaspoon of salt permanently pollutes five gallons of water.
Fairfax City is working this winter to implement the following smart salting practices: calibrating equipment, applying salt brine if weather permits, and educating operators to avoid the overapplication of salt. Pretreatment of roads with salt brine reduces the overall amount of salt used during a snow event.
