Snow is on the forecast for the weekend, so while you're stocking up on cozy indoor supplies, we want to remind you to go easy on the sidewalk salt.
Why?
Sidewalk salt can:
- Corrode vehicles, sidewalks, roads, bridges and parking lots
- Sting the precious little paws of your pets, plus harm fish, plants, and other wildlife
- Raise sodium levels in our drinking water and increase water treatment costs
Try these substitutions:
- Shovel and sweep early and often
- Spread deicer lightly and evenly
- Sweep, store, and reuse deicer
New concrete is vulnerable concrete
Oversalting is particularly sensitive for areas with new concrete sidewalks. Just like new grass or new paint, newly installed concrete is particularly vulnerable to corrosion and needs time to strengthen.
