Behavior Change Campaign: Let's All Look Out For Each Other

lets all look out for each other vz

At least 1 in 5 fatal or severe crashes in Arlington involves distraction based on crash data from 2020-2025. We also understand that distraction is underrepresented in crash data since it’s not always easy to confirm or prove. Arlington’s Vision Zero goal is to eliminate all fatal and severe injury crashes by 2030. To meet our goal, we—as a community—need to literally look out for each other.

This new year, resolve to be fully present as you drive, walk, or any other way you get around. It could save a life. Learn more and get involved.

Phase 1 Engagement Summary Report

vz phase 1 engagement

In October 2025, the Vision Zero team launched the first phase of community engagement on the Action Plan update. Staff sought feedback on people’s experiences since the launch of the Vision Zero program and what they would like to see from the program as it moves forward. We asked the community: “What will it take to get to zero fatalities or injuries on Arlington roads?” Common responses included the need to prevent distracted driving, managing vehicle speeds, and expanding on education and awareness related around key crash factors. To learn more about the Action Plan Community Engagement, explore the executive summary or read the full report.

In April 2026, we will host the second phase of public engagement, seeking feedback on the draft Action Plan update. In advance of that engagement phase, we are hosting a virtual community meeting with the Vision Zero External Stakeholders Group that is open to all community members to learn about how we’re developing the draft plan. More details below.

Save the Date: Wed, January 28 (7– 8:30pm) Vision Zero Action Plan Update Meeting

save the date vz

Join county staff and community representatives on Wednesday, January 28th  from 7:00pm to 8:30 pm for the virtual Vision Zero External Stakeholders Group (ESG) meeting. This is the second of three ESG meetings for the Action Plan Update Process.

The agenda will (1) share what we heard during a public engagement effort hosted in October 2025 and (2) gather input and feedback on a set of draft action items for the plan update. Please join us for the discussion and bring your ideas to help Arlington reach zero by 2030.

High-Injury Network Audit Schedule

Arlington’s Vision Zero High-Injury Network runs on a three-year cycle. The Vision Zero HIN identifies streets within the county that have relatively high rates of injury and fatal crashes. In 2026, the new 2026-2028 High Injury Network (HIN)  goes into effect, and a new round of safety audits and reviews begins  Staff conduct safety audits on each HIN corridor to identify short, middle, and long-term safety improvements.

For the 2026-2028 cycle, here is our tentative schedule:

hin 26-28b vz

Arlington prioritizes projects on the High Injury Network by:

  • Conducting in-person safety audits on each corridor to address immediate and long-term safety needs.
  • Applying the HIN designation as scoring criterion when evaluating locations for improvement
  • Implementing corridor-wide systemic improvements.
  • Providing documented support for safety improvements on HIN corridors when collaborating on projects with other entities.

Visit the HIN page on the Vision Zero website for more information and updates.

Capital-Driven Safety Project Updates:

  • Columbia Pike Forward: Sidewalk Repairs on Segment D
    • Throughout the month of January, crews will be conducting sidewalk quality assurance and repair work on Segment D - between South Garfield Street and South Courthouse Road. Expect short term lane closures during work hours to allow crews to access sidewalks safely. In cases where crews are working on the full width of a sidewalk, look out for detour signs to guide your path around the work site.
  • South Walter Reed Drive Complete Street Project Update
    • Crews are demolishing the median on South Walter Reed Drive at the intersection with 9th Street South and have started work on the west side of the intersection. A new traffic pattern will be in place for about three months to allow crews to work on the west side of the intersection, starting with tree removal ahead of demolishing the median and beginning other work.
