Today’s Briefing

As emotional connections with AI chatbots become more common, Christians need to understand the spiritual dangers of loving an object.

Elizabeth Woodson’s recommended devotionals cover survival in the wilderness, daily spiritual practices, and prayer.

In 1969, CT covered big news, including the moon landing, a concerning rise in infidelity, and the death of theologian Karl Barth.

CT’s latest advice column on bad preaching, family estrangement, and AI-written books.

On The Bulletin this week: President Donald Trump’s Greenland ambitions; the disruption of a Saint Paul, Minnesota, church; how Christians should view protesting; and Democratic Texas representative James Talarico.

Behind the Story

From senior editorial project manager Mia Staub: The Oscar nominations are out! Sinners has made history with 16 nominations, the most ever for one film. (The record was previously a three-way tie between La La Land, All About Eve, and Titanic, with 14 nominations each.)

For me, the list seems almost how I expected. One Battle After Another and Frankenstein were both nominated in some big categories. I am happy Elio got a nomination for best animated feature after it did poorly in the box office. And of course, "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters was nominated for best original song. I was surprised Wicked: For Good didn’t get a nod for costume, production design, or hair and makeup after its strong Oscar presence last year for the first of the two acts. My favorite film of the year, Sorry, Baby, did not get any nominations, but I am glad my runner-up, Train Dreams, got some attention.

You can read the CT reviews of some of these Oscar-nominated films, as well as other movies, here.

Cover of the January / February 2026 of Christianity Today.

When Jesus taught, he used parables. The kingdom of God is like yeast, a net, a pearl. Then and today, to grasp wisdom and spiritual insight, we need the concrete. We need stories. In this issue of Christianity Today, we focus on testimony—the stories we tell, hear, and proclaim about God’s redemptive work in the world. Testimony is a personal application of the Good News. You’ll read Marvin Olasky’s testimony from Communism to Christ, Jen Wilkin’s call to biblical literacy, and a profile on the friendship between theologian Miroslav Volf and poet Christian Wiman. In an essay on pickleball, David Zahl reminds us that play is also a testament to God’s grace. As you read, we hope you’ll apply the truths of the gospel in your own life, church, and neighborhood. May your life be a testimony to the reality of God’s kingdom.
