Good afternoon Cedar Lane Community,
As we look ahead to the weekend, we are closely monitoring the winter storm forecasted for our area. With significant snow and ice totals predicted, there is a possibility that travel conditions may impact our school schedule early next week. We want to ensure all our families are prepared and informed. Please take a moment to review the "Weather Closings" and "Winter Resources for Families" sections located later in this newsletter, which contain important information on how we communicate schedule changes, as well as resources available to families during the winter months.
The timing of this weather is particularly important as next week marks the official end of the second quarter. We know many students are working hard to submit make-up assignments and finalize projects to ensure their grades accurately reflect their progress. Because a snow day could potentially impact deadlines or time spent in the classroom, we encourage students to be proactive! If possible, encourage your student to try to complete and submit any outstanding work digitally as early as possible, with time to inform their teachers of submitted work prior to grades being turned in. Our teachers are here to support you, but a little extra planning now will help ensure a smooth transition into the second half of the year, regardless of what the weather brings.
With hopes that you stay safe through the snow,
The Staff of Cedar Lane School

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 6-12, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
Learn About Opportunities for the Year Following Graduation at the Gap Year Fair
FCPS School Counseling Services and Go Overseas will co-host the annual FCPS Gap Year Fair on Wednesday, January 28, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Marshall High School.
This event is for high school students and their families who are interested in learning about opportunities for the year following high school graduation. Students should register at USA Gap Year Fairs.
 ❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.
