February 6-8, Irving Middle School presents the Virginia premiere of Between the Lines Jr., a family friendly version of the musical based on the book by Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer. Between the Lines Jr. is an empowering and enchanting musical for anyone who has struggled to find their place in the world. An outsider in a new town and a new school, Delilah seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood by the handsome Prince Oliver. But as the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur in extraordinary ways, Delilah realizes her dreams in the real world are worth fighting for. |

Huge shout out to the PTA for providing the teachers and staff with a wellness bar this week. It was LOVED by all. Thanks again to our wonderful PTA staff!!!! |
Dear Irving Middle School Community,
As we approach the end of the quarter, we are encouraging all students to take a careful look at their coursework and complete any outstanding assignments. This is an important time for students to reflect on their progress, ask questions, and finish the quarter strong.
We greatly appreciate your support at home in checking in with your child about their assignments, helping them plan their time, and encouraging them to reach out to teachers if they need clarification or assistance. Even small check-ins can make a big difference in helping students stay organized and confident.
With the impending snowstorm, please note that students will have their school-issued computers with them and will be able to access assignments online.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for supporting your child’s learning. Together, we can help ensure a successful close to the quarter. Stay warm this weekend!
Warm regards,
Kathleen Quigley
Interim Principal
Irving Middle School

Attendance and Illness
Newsletters:
When Should Your Child Stay Home?
Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.

- Healthy Habits to Reduce the Spread of Flu and Other Germs
Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.

- ❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.
Library News:
The library is undergoing BIG changes, as we are shifting around the location of our books. We’ll have some “regular customers” who will notice these shifts immediately, while others will not know where the books had been stored previously. The end result will be more-attractive shelves, and an organization flow that allows students to find books more easily.
Last week’s “Irving Says” Question revolved around a social topic. It asked students if they would rather “have to RESCIND their RSVP to a good friend’s party,” or “have to attend a long party, LAVISHLY hosted by your parents’ friends.” An overwhelming majority of 87% of students responded that they’d rather attend the party with parents, than have to miss their friend’s party.
Encourage your student to have some books on hand for the potential SNOW-IN!
