Dranesville's Winter Weather Preparation
In preparation for the winter weather students brought home their school-issued iPads and laptops. They also brought home books and notebooks so they are prepared should weather impact school next week.
Since there is no homework assigned on weekends, so devices do not need to be used at this time. Laptops and iPads can be kept safely powered off and charged in their sleeves and/or backpacks over the weekend.
In addition to the FCPS Snow Day Activities, Dranesville teachers shared some ideas for how you might enjoy the snowy weather with your child:
Snow Day Activity Ideas from Dranesville Teachers
- Record a WDES morning message of you in the snow saying "Good Morning, Dragons" or "Now for the Moment of Silence" or "Have a great day, Dragons" and email it to jmyoung@fcps.edu.
- Enjoy Art BINGO from our Art Team.
- Family community service opportunity: Adopt a fire hydrant.
Ideas from K-2 Teachers
- Build a snowman with shapes you know.
- Take a walk and say the first sound of all the things that you see.
- Draw a picture and write about your favorite snow activity.
- Go sledding and count how many times you go down/walk up the hill.
- Make hot chocolate and count how many marshmallows you add
- Talk about how water can take different forms: solid, liquid, gas.
- Watch wildlife in nature and talk about what animals/plants need to survive.
- Draw a tens frame in the snow.
- Make and add snowballs to show different teen numbers.
- Name all the different colors of jackets, hats, and gloves that you see.
- Read the temperature on a thermometer, say the numbers before and after that number.
Ideas from 3-6 Teachers
- Take an hourly measurement of snow totals and record/graph.
- Play 20 Questions but all questions are built around the theme of snow.
- Draw out a snowman dressed as your favorite book character. What kind of hat and scarf would it need to have? What kind of props would it have?
- Keep track of highs and lows for temperature, wind speed, and snow totals.
- Read daily for the Dranesville Book Challenge.
- Create a new recipe that requires fractions! (double or halve a recipe)
- Measure how far you can throw a snowball, how fast you can sled down a hill, and how high you can build a snow structure.
- Complete ST Math assignments or Journey Puzzles, or Lexia Units.
Be safe. Be helpful. Be kind. Have fun.
Huge thanks to our tech team for preparing FCPS devices for students to take home and to our teachers for sending home books and activities for our students to enjoy.
