There are calls from MAGA operatives to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to polling locations during the midterm elections. The intent is obvious. They want to intimidate voters, especially in immigrant communities and communities of color, and create fear at the ballot box. Noncitizen voting is already illegal under federal law. Multiple investigations and fact checks have repeatedly confirmed it is exceedingly rare. Even election officials from both parties acknowledge there is no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting. Yet extremists continue to push this lie as a pretext to flood polling places with immigration agents. Let’s be 100 percent clear: ICE agents do not belong at polling locations. Ever. There are now countless reports of American citizens threatened and detained purely because of the color of their skin. The mere presence of ICE at or near polling sites would have a chilling effect because many eligible voters would stay home out of fear. Families would question whether exercising their constitutional right could put loved ones at risk. That is voter suppression by design. Secretaries of state are the chief election officials in their states. They have the authority and the responsibility to ensure polling locations are safe, neutral, and free from intimidation. They must make it clear now that ICE has no role at the polls and that any attempt to interfere with voters will be met with firm opposition. Protect our elections from intimidation and violence. |
