Fighting for journalism and profitable news media Design for first UK journalists’ memorial revealed | Demand for AI content marketplacesAnd STV journalists to strike over salary freeze as broadcaster profits dropGood morning from the team at Press Gazette on Thursday, 23 April. 🪖 Press Gazette has been proud to support the campaign to create a memorial for UK journalists killed in conflict since its launch. It ties into old-school journalism, incorporating symbols “###” and “-30-”. The launch was supported by foreign office minister Chris Elmore who said: “This memorial will stand as a place for reflection and recognition, a visible reminder of what it costs to bring truth into the light and of the debt we owe to those who never came home…” So far £300,000 has been raised but another £700,000 is still needed. Can you help? 🌟 Yesterday Press Gazette convened media leaders for our latest roundtable event, grappling with five key challenges. Dominic Ponsford, still glowing from managing to shoehorn an Arnold Schwarzenegger mantra into his words to the room, has rounded up our big takeaways. Unfortunately we can’t give you a silver bullet solution. But we can share what other publishers are thinking and a few noteworthy success stories. One theme was that publishers are chomping at the bit to start being rewarded for the value their work brings many other companies. Currently the scraping economy misses us out of the value exchange almost entirely. Could AI content marketplaces be the solution? The demand is clearly there, as proven by the scale of unsanctioned crawling. 📽️ And finally, journalists at STV have decided to strike for the second time this year after the Scottish broadcaster confirmed they’re not getting a base salary rise. STV revealed profits and revenue are down as it was hit especially hard by a tough advertising market last year. But the NUJ said staff are already “overworked and underpaid” and they should be rewarded with “real actions” not just words of appreciation. The one-day strike has been deliberately chosen to coincide with the counting of the results in the upcoming Holyrood elections. |
