ED launches real-time identity verification for FAFSA
The Education Department has introduced a real-time identity verification tool for Free Application for Federal Student Aid applicants to combat fraud. This measure screens applicants for risk and requires high-risk individuals to complete a live camera check with government-issued identification. The tool aims to reduce the administrative burden on financial aid officers and prevent financial aid from going to "ghost students." The department reports preventing $563 million in fraud nationwide since last year.
