New Comprehensive Plan Amendment
(Heritage Resources) PA 2026-CW-1CP
On December 7, 2009, the Board of Supervisors supported the creation of an annual process to revise Heritage Resource information in the Comprehensive Plan, responding to a request from the Fairfax County History Commission. On July 9, 2013, through the approval of the 2013 Comprehensive Plan Work Program, the Board of Supervisors reauthorized this annual consideration. Plan amendments occurred in 2013 (PA 2013-CW-6CP), 2015 (PA 2013-CW-8CP), and 2018 (PA 2017-CW-4CP). Through approval of successive Comprehensive Plan Work Programs, the Board authorization has been reaffirmed and carried forward, including the most recent approval of the 2025 Comprehensive Plan Work Program.
The purpose of the 2026 Plan amendment is to update information pertaining to Heritage Resources in the Comprehensive Plan, primarily to incorporate current information relating to the Inventory of Historic Sites (Inventory), which is a list of historic properties in Fairfax County, to reflect History Commission actions. The Inventory is maintained by the Fairfax County History Commission. Since the last update in 2018, nine properties have been added to the Inventory, the names of forty-two properties have been updated for clarification, the historic status of one property has been revised, and the addresses of two properties have been updated. The Department of Planning and Development, Heritage Resources Branch (DPD-HR), also identified, in consultation with the Fairfax County Park Authority Archaeology and Collections Branch, sixteen properties for removal from the Inventory that no longer retain architectural or archaeological integrity. References to the Land Use Policy Plan have been edited to refer to the revised subsection, Criteria for Development and Redevelopment, for guidance pertaining to Heritage Resources.
