Better with Age
In the 100 years since its founding, and a decade since its relaunch under John Lippman, Book of the Month is cooler than ever, capturing a new generation of readers with its branded editions, careful curation, and splashy marketing. The Green Book Alliance—comprised of BISG, BookNet Canada, and the U.K.’s Book Industry Communication—have launched a Book Carbon Calculator to help publishers gauge their environmental impact. Katherine Locke has been tapped as the next president of advocacy organization Authors Against Book Bans. And to celebrate Pride Month, we’re talking to LGBTQ+ leaders in the book world who are championing queer stories, starting with Kaitlyn Mahoney of Umbrella Bookstore and Hannah Moushabeck of Interlink Publishing. In other news, Room author Emma Donoghue will pen the screenplay for a film adaptation of Ava Reid’s novel Lady Macbeth, per Deadline. British bookselling chain WH Smith has raised £102 million in new capital through the sale of 26 million shares, reports the Bookseller. From “book-cations” to hotel libraries, literary travel is having a moment, proclaims the New York Times. Director Ben Rivers talks with the Guardian about how fan mail from Don DeLillo led to his latest play. The trailer for the final Heartstopper film, hitting Netflix next month, just dropped. And bookseller and author Diane Leslie, a longtime fixture of the Los Angeles literary scene, has died at 84.
