WWES LAST 2025-2026 Update

June 17, 2026

Dear Waynewood Owls,

This final week of the 2025-2026 school year has been a beautiful celebration of everything our Owls have accomplished. From the first day in August to the final bell this week, I have watched our students grow leaps and bounds—not just academically, but socially and emotionally. They have shown resilience, kindness, and a true passion for learning.

To our wonderful sixth graders, as you prepare to spread your wings and fly off to middle school, remember that once an Owl, always an Owl. You have left an indelible mark on Waynewood Elementary, and we know you will achieve incredible things in this next chapter. We also want to extend our warmest wishes to the families who are moving away this summer. For our military families who are relocating due to new orders, we send a deeply heartfelt thank you for your service and sacrifice. Thank you for sharing your children with us; your presence has enriched our school community, and we will miss you dearly.

This milestone week also brings a very bittersweet farewell to a beloved cornerstone of the Waynewood family. After 26 extraordinary years of dedicated service, our wonderful clinic aide, Mrs. Lynn Deleo, is retiring. For over two decades, Mrs. Deleo has been the comforting heart of our health clinic. She has tended to countless bumps, bruises, and childhood illnesses, and has administered medications with the utmost diligence, care, and maternal warmth. Her gentle reassurances have calmed nervous students and worried parents alike, leaving a long-lasting impact on generations of Owls. Please join me in thanking Mrs. Deleo for her incredible legacy of care and wishing her the absolute best as she begins this well-deserved new chapter.

As we look ahead to the sunny days of summer, I want to thank each and every one of you for your  partnership, support, and dedication to our school. A school is only as strong as its community, and Waynewood is truly blessed with the best. I wish all of our students, staff, and families a safe, fun, and happy summer. May your days be filled with laughter, relaxation, good books, and wonderful adventures. We already look forward to welcoming our returning Owls back in the fall. Until then, take care of yourselves and each other!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

Sixth Grade Legacy Mural

6th Grade Mural Final Product

Our 6th Grade students completed their mural.  It is located near one of the doors to the courtyard and features Owls eating lunch and taking care of courtyard plantings.  The 6th graders did an amazing job on the mural this year!

Summer Learning Resources

As summer begins, FCPS is pleased to share a collection of Summer Learning Resources designed to help students review and practice skills learned during the school year.

Resources are organized by grade level and include opportunities for students to revisit key concepts, strengthen skills, and explore new ideas throughout the summer months. Families may access and use the resources at any time based on their interests and needs.

Additional resources will continue to be added throughout June.

We encourage families to explore the Summer Learning Resources Webpage as one of many ways to support continued learning and engagement over the summer.

Summer Meals for Students

Starting Monday, June 22, no-cost meals will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the sites and times listed on the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage. Students must remain on site while eating their meals.

This year, thanks to generous support from Educate Fairfax, families may also receive one no-cost breakfast and lunch per adult at the following elementary schools: Braddock, Dogwood, Glen Forest, Hutchison, Hybla Valley, and London Towne.

Summer sites will continue to be added, so please check the Summer Food webpage regularly for updates.

Early Release Wednesdays 2026-2027

FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year. The number of days has been reduced from eight to four.

Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with their peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.

Please mark your calendar now for next school year's early release Wednesday schedule.

  • October 21
