Summer Resources to Stay Curious, Healthy, and Busy

The FCPS Summer Resource Guide has activities and tips on a variety of subjects and interests, from camps and activities to health and safety resources. Be sure to keep checking during the summer, as more resources may be added.

Learning Doesn’t Take a Vacation — and Neither Does Fun!

Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce learning, and stay engaged! FCPS’ Summer Learning webpage offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until the new school year begins.

Provide Feedback on Secondary Mathematics Instructional Resource

FCPS will adopt new mathematics instructional resources for Math 6 (middle school only) through Algebra 2 for the 2026-27 school year. A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers met to review materials submitted by vendors. The public is invited to review and provide feedback on the proposed resource.

Access the proposed resource for middle school Math 6 through Algebra 2 in person or on the Mathematics Basal Resource webpage from Saturday, June 13, to Sunday, July 12. Those reviewing instructional materials will provide feedback through a digital form. All community feedback will be shared with the review committee and the Fairfax County School Board before a board vote in July. 

Hard copies of instructional materials will be available for review at Willow Oaks Welcome Center, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. If review hours are needed outside of these hours, please email MathBasalReview@fcps.edu.

Westbriar Welcomes Gold Medalist Alumnus

A very special alumnus visited Westbriar Elementary School students, none other than Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion figure skater Ilia Malinin. The Olympian became known as the “Quad God” because of his ability to land some of the most difficult quadruple jumps in figure skating, including the first quadruple axel in competition.

Five FCPS Teams, 15 Individuals Win 2026 Spring VHSL Sports Championships

Congratulations to all the FCPS student athletes who participated in the 2026 spring sports season. This year, five teams and 15 individuals won the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6 championship in their respective sports, and five teams and 13 individuals were the state runners-up. A Slam Dunk Success: Westfield Player Heads to Division 1 College

Westfield High School graduate Jemon Price was named the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 Boys Player of the Year. This fall, he will continue his basketball career at Wofford College, competing at the Division I level. Read more about Jemon and watch this video to hear how he has “locked in” to both studies and sports.


After Competing on the World Stage, Hayfield Seniors Look to Their Futures

More than 600 teams from over 10 countries gathered in Houston in April for the FIRST Robotics World Championship — one of the most competitive youth robotics events in the world. Among them was Hayfield Secondary School's Team 614, the Night Hawks, representing both their school and FCPS on the global stage.

Elementary Students Shine in Global Problem-Solving Competition

In a challenge that combined problem-solving and performance, Forestville Elementary School students worked together to navigate a train through a course and turn its cargo into an art piece.

The team, which included seven Forestville fourth grade students, competed against 53 other teams representing eight countries at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.

Two Students Compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City

Two students from the Musical Theatre and Actors Studio class at Fairfax Academy will join the best in high school talent next week in New York City to compete for a prestigious "Jimmy" award. They were nominated for the Jimmys after winning Best Actor and Best Actress during last month’s Brandon Victor Dixon Awards. Read about these talented students.


Cashing in on Critical Thinking: Students Excel in National Economics Competition

A team of Langley High School students brought their economic knowledge to the national stage, placing third in a competition hosted by the Council for Economic Education.

The two-day competition tested 16 teams of high school students from 11 states with complex questions on micro- and macroeconomics, as well as current global economic events. Read about Langley’s competitors.


Virginia PTA Honors FCPS Superintendent With 2026 Power Partner Award

Commitment to community involvement and family engagement are two of the reasons the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (PTA) honored Dr. Reid with a 2026 Power Partner award during its June 5 Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. Read about this PTA recognition.


No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide a safe space to address concerns such as:

  • Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss.
  • Anxiety, worry, fears.
  • Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships.
  • Academic stress.

Refer your child to therapy by visiting the Hazel Health in FCPS website and select “Set up care for your child in minutes.” Visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for more information.

Your Child’s Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services

Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. 

The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports, and other services.

Additional Mental Health Resources

FCPS has many resources available to support your child’s mental health. During after-school hours, parents and students who need additional assistance can use the 988 Lifeline to get free, confidential guidance from trained crisis counselors on how to best help someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can call or text the number. 

Recent reports have shown an 11% drop in suicides among young people since the rollout of 988. Please note, the hotline is not only for those experiencing suicidal ideation (or thoughts), it is also available for any mental health or substance abuse-related crisis and those with a loved one experiencing those crises or suicidal thoughts. 

And as always, if your concern is an emergency, you should call 911.


Meals for Students Available Starting June 22

Starting Monday, June 22, no-cost meals will be provided to students on a first-come, first-served basis at the sites and times listed on the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage. Students must remain on site while eating their meals.

Summer sites will continue to be added, so check the Summer Food Service webpage regularly for updates.

Recognizing Outstanding Employees

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to excellence in teaching, school leadership, and providing support. Each June, the FCPS Honors ceremony celebrates employees who model the highest standards.

From a talented field of 75 finalists, 12 employees — including Emergency Management Planning Specialist Purvis Dawson, pictured — were named Outstanding Employee Award winners on June 10. Visit the FCPS Honors webpage to see the full list of winners and finalists.


April FCPS CARES Recipient Invites Students to Achieve Independence

FCPS CARES gives parents, caregivers, staff, and community members the opportunity to recognize employees who go above and beyond to help others. Among the April CARES of the Month recipients is Kendra Trainer, a reading specialist at Hayfield Elementary School.  

Trainer was nominated by Cameron Lyons, a multiple disabilities teacher at Hayfield Secondary School. Once a week, Lyons takes Work and Transition students across the street to work with Trainer. 

“Ms. Trainer has given my kids the chance to develop valuable vocational skills that will help them to achieve future independence and self-sufficiency,” she said. “I couldn't be happier that Ms. Trainer has allowed these kids to act as mini-celebrities at Hayfield Elementary. Thanks to her, they look forward to going to work every single week!”

In-Person Instructional Job Fair on Wednesday, June 24

FCPS is hosting an in-person Instructional Job Fair on Wednesday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lake Braddock Secondary School. There will be networking and interviewing opportunities with representatives from FCPS schools. Learn more and register for this job fair.
