Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Families,
The weather is finally turning in our favor, and as the season changes, we find ourselves surrounded by reasons to celebrate our students’ hard work and remarkable talents. From the concert hall to the wrestling mat, the Woodson spirit is shining brightly this spring.
Our music department continues to reach new heights, and we are thrilled to share the results of the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra auditions. Please join us in congratulating Mary Kate Jones, Audrey Shifflett, Catie Morton, Lisa Kurian, Faith Lee, Aiden Brennan, Carson Fenner, and Graham Bickford for their selection to the All-Virginia Chorus. Their dedication to their craft is truly inspiring. We also want to recognize our talented alternates—Grace Verne, Allie MacDonald, John Meyers, Keaton Brennan, and Luke Theodore—for their hard-earned achievements in this competitive process.
On the athletic front, our students have been making waves at the state level. In wrestling, we are incredibly proud of Nimmar Al-Qudwa Al-Hussieni, who secured an impressive 4th-place finish in the state championships. Our track and field stars have also been rewriting the record books; Kendall Anderson broke the school record in the 500m with a time of 1:16.40, and Barrett Pullen earned 3rd place in the state for shot put. Additionally, Isaac Schools, Kendall Anderson, Keira Arenholz, and Camille Lichtenstein have all officially qualified for All-State Indoor Track and Field.
One of the most moving stories this season comes from Maia Kim, a cellist in the Woodson Orchestra and a recipient of the 2026 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County. Inspired by a desire to share the joy of music with her Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) peers, Maia partnered with Mrs. Wilcox to bring "Vibrotextile" technology to our school. This innovative harness allows wearers to physically feel the vibrations of different orchestral sections, from the deep resonance of the bass to the bright notes of the violins.
Watching our students dance and connect to music through this technology has been a powerful reminder of how empathy and innovation can build a more inclusive community. Maia recently shared these possibilities with music educators from across the state, ensuring her impact reaches far beyond our hallways.
As we look toward the future, your voice remains a vital part of our success. This Monday, March 9, you will receive the bi-annual FCPS Family Engagement Survey in your inbox. This confidential survey is an essential tool for us to understand how we can better serve your family and foster a trusting, caring culture. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You can learn more via this link. Please share your feedback by Monday, March 23.
Finally, we hope to see you at our PTSO meeting this Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. It is a wonderful opportunity to stay connected and involved in the initiatives that make Woodson such a special place for our children.
Don’t forget to come out this Friday to support our unified basketball team for Fanquest! The festivities start at 6:30 pm and the game starts at 7 pm. They are hot off a win at lake Braddock this past weekend and an appearance at George Mason University.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for making this season of growth so rewarding.
