College students are navigating a complex digital landscape that includes inconsistent AI policies, unreliable Wi-Fi and an overwhelming number of digital tools. Students say university-provided guidance would help bridge the gap, but it is not always delivered in the way students hope. The sheer number of digital platforms and tools required for coursework, communication, and campus life is overwhelming college students. With daily use of between six and 15 tools, students report frequent stress, confusion, and missed deadlines due to fragmented systems.

Many of the universities integrating AI across campus operations lack comprehensive governance frameworks, posing risks to data security and academic integrity, writes edtech expert Alexander Slagg. Institutions such as Austin Community College and Cornell University are establishing committees and new leadership roles to manage AI use, involving stakeholders from various departments. Effective AI governance requires visibility into AI usage, risk management, and continuous adaptation to evolving technologies.
