There are certain fashion trends that feel like they belong to a very specific kind of body. Micro-minis. Low-rise jeans. And almost everything associated with ’90s minimalism.
Bias-cut silk, sleek black coats and silhouettes designed to skim the body in one long, uninterrupted line—this aesthetic was personified by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as the famously sleek Calvin Klein runways of the decade. Collectively, they looked effortless with an I-just-threw-this-on appeal. But the illusion of effortlessness relied on something else, too: bodies slim enough to disappear into the clothes.
