Prose and Cons
After a six-year hiatus, ReedPop’s much-hyped BookCon returned to New York City’s Javits Center last weekend, drawing tens of thousands of fans who eagerly shelled out for books and merch but also felt shortchanged by poor crowd control. In light of reports that agents and editors are using ChatGPT to evaluate manuscripts, the Authors Guild is speaking out against publishing pros’ adoption of AI. Plus, we rounded up this month’s must-see book-to-screen adaptations in our new column, To Watch or Not To Watch. In other news, the CEO of Russia’s largest publisher has been detained by authorities as part of a probe into LGBTQ “extremism,” reports the Moscow Times. Tom Hooper will direct a film adaptation of Millie Bobby Brown’s 2023 novel Nineteen Steps for Netflix, per Deadline. NPR’s Planet Money digs into how booksellers curate their shelves in the latest episode of its behind-the-scenes series on publishing, which has also covered the mechanics of book deals and the book supply chain. And longtime publisher and agent Dean Cooke has died at 71.
