Your Story Starts Here
Kings Park Families,
Last week, our military-connected students had a chance to come together at a special PurpleUp! morning meeting. It was a heartwarming start to the day as we recognized these students' resilience and unique experiences during the Month of the Military Child.
Our Earth Day Spirit Week is off to a great start with students proudly showing their love of the Earth and animals during yesterday’s Wildlife Day. The excitement is building for tomorrow’s PTA Earth Day Event. We look forward to seeing our Lions working together to clean up our school grounds and learn about the importance of caring for our shared environment.
While the weather outside continues to fluctuate, our students remain focused and engaged with their spring learning goals. Each day, students demonstrate dedication to their learning and contribute to the positive energy of our school community.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Dotty Lin, Mrs. Jenn Burke and Mrs. Anna Kaplan

School Lunch Hero Day - May 1st
On May 1st, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day, honoring the dedicated professionals who prepare and serve meals to students every day. These dedicated teams support student health, fuel learning, and create welcoming environments in Fairfax County Public Schools. School Lunch Heroes go beyond simply serving meals; they prepare healthy, nutritious foods, ensure food safety, ensure students with special diets can safely eat at school, build meaningful relationships with students, and elevate student voice by continuously adapting menus based on student feedback.
All staff and students are encouraged to show their appreciation by thanking the cafeteria teams. Online resources including card templates and coloring pages are available at https://schoolnutrition.org/about-school-meals/school-lunch-hero-day/school-lunch-hero-day-resources/
Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day: May 6th
Get ready for Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 6th! Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways. Students who walk and bike get more physical activity, have more time to socialize with their friends, and develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. The community benefits from reduced pollution and traffic congestion. We encourage participants to plan a safe route in advance.
A fun way to celebrate this day is to form a “walking train” with other Kings Park friends! Meet at the bike racks (to the left of main entrance) at 8:20am to celebrate! Bus transportation will still be available and will follow the same route schedules. Kiss and Ride will still be available.
Family Input for Class Placements 2026-2027
As we begin to plan for the 2026-2027 school year, we are inviting your input. Creating class assignments requires careful consideration and the involvement of many perspectives. We know a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. Should you have additional information about your specific child that school staff may not know, particularly regarding learning style and classroom environment; we ask that you please complete the Family Input Form no later than Monday, May 4th, 2026. If you have more than one child attending KPES, please complete one form per child.
We ask that you do not request specific teachers or friendship pairings and keep the information shared about your child and the type of learning environment you feel would be the most productive for him/her/them. We assure you that with or without a form, each child’s strengths and needs are considered. As in the past, families will receive class placement notification just prior to school starting.
Updates to 2026-27 School Year Calendar
The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs. View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website.
The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026 — has not changed.
SOL Support:
Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.
As a reminder, Kings Park 3rd graders will take the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests on the following days:
- 3rd Grade Reading SOL - Wednesday, May 6th
- 3rd Grade Math SOL - Thursday, May 14th
Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters.
