NEW! Transcribe sheet music from America's founding era
By the People and the Music Division are excited to launch a new campaign to celebrate America's 250th birthday! Help us transcribe sheet music from the period around the American Revolution to learn more about what Americans were performing, hearing, dancing and marching to, and singing 250 years ago. The campaign also features early American music books, including the first hymnal of the Ephrata Cloister in Pennsylvania (1746).
If this is your first time transcribing sheet music, read through our specialized instructions before you get started. The most important things to transcribe are the titles, subjects, the creators and publishers of the work, not musical notations or symbols. You'll find all of these tips and more in our helpful guide.
By the People orientation webinar recording now available
The recording of our orientation webinar is now available on the Library of Congress website. Feel free to share it widely with those you know who are interested in volunteering with By the People. We had a great time with everyone who attended and plan to make these orientation sessions a regular part of our annual programming. Thanks to everyone who joined us on April 9 - stay tuned for news about future By the People webinars!
Happy National Library Week! Find a Library of Congress card catalog near you
It's National Library Week (April 19-25)! We celebrate the important role that libraries and library workers play in their communities across the United States. The By the People team especially wants to acknowledge and thank all of our newsletter subscribers who support their local libraries as staff, volunteers, patrons, and in many other ways.
The Library of Congress is celebrating by sending card cataloging cabinets to Centers for the Book in every US state and territory. These catalog kiosks highlight the wide range of programs that the Library of Congress offers to all Americans - including the By the People program. Find your state's catalog kiosk and think about making a visit!
Happy transcribing,
Abby, Carlyn, and Lauren
