A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the southern Philippines causes 4 deaths

More than 200 people were injured, officials said. The quake, the strongest to strike the Philippines this year, was centered at sea about 8 miles southwest of General Santos, a city of more than 700,000 people. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the threat of a tsunami had largely passed about five hours after the quake sent waves onshore in the region.
