The ceasefire between the U.S., its ally Israel and Iran was unravelling on Monday morning after Israel launched new attacks on Beirut and Iran responded overnight by sending a barrage of missiles into northern Israel. In Yemen, the Houthis raised the spectre of a wider regional war by firing rockets toward Jaffa, in Israel.

According to a statement carried by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, the Israel Defense Forces said it was preparing for “at least several days of conflict” with Iran and that the military was operating in co-ordination with the U.S., though it claimed that the strikes used only Israeli aircraft and aerial refueling tankers.

The IDF added that, so far, the Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon had not joined the attacks on Israel.
