Today’s Briefing

With the World Cup set to kick off, here are 14 global soccer stars who are vocal about Jesus.

Should young adults share paychecks with their parents? Gen Z Christians are at odds over Kenya’s "black tax."

Russell Moore explains why he doesn’t debate atheists.

Behind the Story

How are CT staff preparing for the World Cup, which begins Thursday?

Senior news writer Emily Belz: I’m not a big follower of soccer, but my journalist cousin has a podcast on US soccer called Scuffed with a significant following. I tune in from time to time so I can pretend I’m a World Cup expert.

Graphic designer Rick Szuecs: I’m a huge World Cup fan, and of course I’ll be cheering for Brazil! Like most Brazilians, I love soccer, and we’re all eager to bring the trophy home again since our last World Cup title was back in 2002. And, to be honest, no Brazilian enjoys seeing Argentina win it all—haha!

Full-stack developer Ryan Gorgol: While I don’t think the US men’s team is going to be terribly competitive this tournament, I am prepared to be surprised! There is a lot of young American talent playing abroad, which points to an exciting future. My only other spoken language is German, so I tend to favor them once the US has been knocked out. If those two teams are out, I’m with Rick Szuecs and become an ardent Brazil fan.

Senior news writer Cody Benjamin: Since moving to Minnesota about 10 years ago, I’ve adopted the local MLS team as my one Midwestern franchise. This has primed me for more interest in World Cup soccer. I’m particularly interested in Brazil after learning of its many outspoken believers.

Senior features editor Taylor Berglund: I always have to root for the US team. But I’m also cheering for Colombia; my brother-in-law is a native Colombian, and he, my sister, and my niece get so excited for their team that it's contagious!

Cover of the May/June issue

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back.
