Scott Rudin and ‘Death of a Salesman’; Pink; ‘Schmigadoon!’
Theater Update
June 8, 2026

Dear Theater Fans,

What a show! Pink really does know how to get a party started!

The opening number for the 79th Tony Awards was something to behold, a true celebration of Broadway and all the Tony-nominated shows. There was so much to take in during last night’s ceremony, including a landmark win for the “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” costume designer Qween Jean.

Also notable: Michael Paulson’s fresh report about the producer Scott Rudin, whose production of “Death of a Salesman” won big last night. Michael wrote: “The victory makes clear what has been obvious for months: Like it or not, Rudin is back.”

Below is a recap of the highlights, courtesy of our excellent team of correspondents, reporters, critics, photographers and editors. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Musicals: “Schmigadoon!” took home four Tony Awards, including for best musical, book and score. Two other musicals, “The Lost Boys” and “Ragtime,” also took home four awards, including for best featured actor and actress (Ali Louis Bourzgui and Shoshana Bean, both of “The Lost Boys”) and best leading actor and actress (Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy, both of “Ragtime”). “Ragtime” also won the Tony for best revival of a musical.
  • Plays: The “Liberation” playwright Bess Wohl became the first American woman to win a Tony for best play since Wendy Wasserstein won the award in 1989, for “The Heidi Chronicles.” And the six awards for “Death of a Salesman” included one for best play revival. Leading actor in a play went to John Lithgow for “Giant,” and Lesley Manville received the best leading actress award for her work in “Oedipus.”
