Graduation at Woodson 2026

Carter G. Woodson Class of 2026 Graduation

Message from Mr. Greata

What a beautiful graduation we had last week and a great send-off to our amazing Class of 2026. Each year reminds us of why we are here, which is to simply pour all that we can into our incredible students so they are ready for their next big step. I want to extend a huge thank you to Josh Peters, our Director of Student Services, alongside our graduation coordinators Megan Pitts and Casey Delaney, for all of their incredibly hard work preparing our ceremony. I must also extend my deepest thanks to our entire faculty and staff for working with our students every day of their four years to get them to this important milestone; while there are too many names to list individually, your dedication is what makes this achievement possible.

Looking back at our recent end-of-the-year events, each one was a wonderful celebration of how far our students have come, how hard they’ve worked this school year, and a great chance to let off a little steam. Whether it was the Adapted Curriculum department's celebration wishing our transitioning students well, the Adapted Curriculum Day Prom, or the Deaf and Hard of Hearing picnic at Canterbury Woods, joy was truly the name of the game, and our students have given us so much to be proud of. In that same spirit of community, we are immensely grateful to the PTSO for their partnership in organizing the All-Night Grad Party for our seniors. Thank you all for working tirelessly to provide a safe, fun alternative for our wonderful students on graduation night.

Today, we celebrated our Multilingual Learners and their tremendous progress on the WIDA Access test. We had 73 out of 103 make progress and 25 students that tested out of ESOL services completely. Thank you to Bomin Collins and all of our ESOL teachers, Trish Scarlett, Laura Brown, Julia Fu, Patrice Hughes, Ashley Neal, Will Parrish, Candice Tenerelli, and Halimah Wells for all of your hard work!

Beyond these celebrations, we were also treated to some amazing music at our recent Band Concert, which was both fantastic and highly entertaining. The performance closed out with a surprise John Philip Sousa piece featuring our talented piccolo section stepping out for a spotlight solo. The immense talent of our students was on full display, including Nate Vailikit playing a beautiful rendition of the Gershwin Fantasy by Ralph Martino on the saxophone, and Natalie Jiang soloing brilliantly on the flute in the Carmen Fantaisie Brillante by François Borne. It was simply unbelievable - Thank you Aaron Morgan and Helen Landers!

As the school year winds down, please keep a few important schedule adjustments in mind. Half-days will begin this Thursday, June 11, and you can find the full exam schedule in our weekly newsletter. Additionally, please make an early note that on Wednesday, June 17, we will have a unique schedule change where the school day will only run from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Have a great week, Woodson! Study hard, and let’s finish this year out strong.

Counselor Corner

We presented our Senior Prep Lesson to the Class of 2027 to highlight what they should be doing this summer to prepare for senior year. We introduced the Senior Roadmap & Next Steps document, a helpful guide of next steps and planning tips no matter their path after graduation. They should also be familiarizing themselves with the Senior Padlet, finalizing their list of 5-7 colleges (and deciding on deadlines), working on essays, visiting colleges, and preparing to complete the Common App when it opens Aug. 1. The College Padlet has many great resources, like testing info, essay-writing support, and college research. This and many specialty padlets are located on the College & Career Center Padlet on the Woodson Student Services padlet.

Students in need of credit recovery due to failing a core course may register for free. Please let your school counselor know once you register for a summer class.

The deadline has passed for summer self-directed Econ/Personal Finance and for summer online campus courses. If you already registered and need to keep your FCPS laptop, please complete the opt-in form by June 13.

Congrats 2026 Grads! We are so proud of you and will miss you very much. You will always be a Woodson Cavalier!

We encourage all families to review the Student Services Padlet over the summer for helpful resources. Keep in mind that school counselors do not work over the summer, so if you receive an auto-reply this summer, we will respond when we return in August. It’s a pleasure to serve our community, and we wish all families a happy & safe summer!

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime. More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.
