Welcome back to False Flag! Reality-TV villain Spencer Pratt’s apparent failure to make it to the Los Angeles mayoral runoff has set off voter-fraud accusations from Donald Trump and his supporters. There’s also been no shortage of schadenfreude from Pratt’s critics. What happened here is no mystery. Pratt was a Republican campaigning on MAGA-slop videos in a blue city at a time when national trends heavily favor Democrats. Since rising to national prominence on The Hills nearly two decades ago, Pratt’s claim to fame has been that he’s a uniquely obnoxious person. Who wouldn’t vote for a mayor like that! Apparently, a lot of Angelenos. Still, Trump supporters seem eager to fold Pratt’s likely defeat into a larger narrative about cheating lefties—a politically useful story to tell ahead of the midterms when you can expect many more, and much louder, cries of fraud.
