| Hello. We've got the latest as US Congress flexes its muscles over the Iran war with President Donald Trump. A whole country's train network grinds to a halt - and not because of the European heatwave. And we have an unusual, and high-risk, eating competition from the UK... | |

TOP OF THE AGENDA | Congress issues Trump 'a slap on the wrist' over Iran - what does it mean? |
|
| | "These Senators have just made my job more difficult," Trump said in response. Credit: Reuters | As far as rebukes from Congress against the president go, it was more symbolic than anything. But the War Powers Act vote on Tuesday did carry some significance. The measure, approved by the Republican-controlled Senate, prevents Trump from continuing hostilities with Iran without its approval. It's not legally binding and won't be sent to Trump for his consideration; he called it "poorly timed and meaningless". But it was backed by four members of his own party, hinting at internal division ahead of November's midterms. As one expert told the BBC, this "slap on the wrist" may also reflect the American public's views on the war. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | The UK's summers are getting hotter. It's nowhere near ready |
|
| | | Forecasters have warned of a danger to life in the UK from the hot weather. Credit: Getty Images | Large parts of the UK are under a red weather warning amid exceptionally hot temperatures, and much of Europe is suffering, too. But scientists warn it's only going to get hotter in coming years - and that the UK is not ready. The government's independent climate adviser has already raised the red flag, writes our climate reporter Mark Poynting, saying government preparations for a warmer world have been "woeful". This is where the UK needs to act, from homes to roads to railways. |
