For the first time in our history, we’re relying entirely on reader donations to fund our reporting after years of philanthropic support from our visionary founding donor.

Believe it or not, we here at The Intercept really do try to send as few fundraising emails as possible.

But we’re up against a critically important fundraising deadline — and if we fall short, we’ll be facing some very difficult decisions.

For the first time in our history, we’re relying entirely on reader donations to fund our reporting after years of philanthropic support from our visionary founding donor. At the same time, we’re undertaking some of our most ambitious investigations and legal fights ever, taking on ICE, AIPAC, and more.

The bottom line is this: To ensure that we have the support necessary to continue providing hard-hitting investigative reporting during these increasingly perilous times, we still need to raise $100,000 by midnight tomorrow.

So if you value adversarial independent journalism that’s unafraid of making powerful enemies — and if you can afford even $5 — please donate today.

Just since the start of this year, The Washington Post has slashed one-third of its staff. NPR just announced that 28 journalists, including some of its most veteran reporters, would be let go. The BBC is eliminating a whopping 1,800 jobs.

The Intercept has a long-term strategy to avoid the same fate, but we’re not immune to industry trends.

And in the 17 months since Donald Trump was sworn in, we have learned all too well that the tsunami of threats and hurdles from an administration hell-bent on retribution against news outlets that Trump calls “the enemy of the people” will make it even harder for us to do our work.

Our best hope for surviving these dark and dangerous times is to finish this month’s campaign strong and meet tomorrow’s fundraising goal.
