In the opening hours of the US-Israeli war with Iran, a strike on a primary school in Minab became one of the conflict's defining tragedies. Of 156 killed, 120 were children, and rescue workers are still searching for remains five months on. "You can't call it a school," says teacher Amaineh Nademi as she walks through what is left of it - just "walls that smell of death, grief and the blood that was shed here". She rembers hearing explosions, the sounds of screaming, children crying and then the school collapsing. Media reports say investigators believe it is likely American forces struck the school unintentionally, although the US has not admitted responsibility. Satellite images show an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps compound nearby was struck several times.

Everything about a camel has evolved to deal with heat, but in one of the hottest and driest places on Earth, even the "ships of the desert" are suffering. Temperatures in parts of Africa now frequently exceed 50C (122F). Ali Umer, a herder in the Afar region of Ethiopia, says his animals are getting blisters on their feet and hot sand burns on their skin as climate change pushes already punishing temperatures even higher. In one area of Somalia, the animals have a mortality rate of nearly 73%. And as the animals endure severe heat stress, the people who rely on them for their livelihoods also suffer.
