Tell the FCC to Stop Its Unconstitutional Attacks on ABC

Dear Mother Jones Reader,

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has once again escalated his attacks on the First Amendment.

The agency kicked off early reviews of ABC's broadcast-station licenses — abusing a standard license-renewal process to harass a network for airing criticism of Trump.¹

Since becoming chairman, Carr has repeatedly attacked the network and opened at least three dubious investigations ... each time after ABC programming upset Trump. You may remember how we all rallied to defend Jimmy Kimmel last fall after Disney/ABC caved to Carr’s now-infamous mafioso threats.

This time, the network is standing up, and we have their back. Media companies should not serve at the beck and call of the president and his henchmen. We haven’t always agreed with Disney/ABC, but Free Press supports those who stand up for democracy.

Our democratic process relies on free, safe and equitable access to honest journalism. By policing broadcasters like this, Carr is enabling this authoritarian regime to rewrite the truth and control the narrative.

This proceeding is dangerous and corrupt, and must be stopped. We have only a matter of days until the deadline for public comment closes — add your name if you’re with us.

Carr’s claiming that the early license-renewal order stems from an ongoing probe into Disney’s DEI practices. This is a shameless scapegoating of marginalized communities — and a flimsy cover for government censorship. The administration’s ongoing attacks on lawful and important DEI programs are immoral and misleading.²

The FCC has the authority to review station licenses every eight years, but calling for an early license renewal is extremely rare.³ Carr can dress up his actions all he wants, but we see his true motivations: He is abusing his position to silence dissent, and let Trump control the media.
