Only four months into his role as homeland security secretary, there appears to be growing tension between Markwayne Mullin and the White House after some early missteps, according to a senior Trump administration official and a senior Department of Homeland Security official.

Mullin last week directed ICE officers nationwide to pause vehicle stops, which President Donald Trump reversed a day later. The administration official told NBC News that Mullin’s decision was “100%” a bad move and that it was done without White House sign-off.
