| | | | | Happy Friday, Chicago. Last week, the editorial board called on Illinois officials to release the investigation into misconduct allegations against former state Rep. Harry Benton. Yesterday, the Legislative Ethics Commission announced that the report is coming out. Good. Talk of the city buying back its parking meters has reopened old wounds for many Chicagoans. Columnist Elizabeth Shackelford writes of the “pointless suffering” the U.S. is inflicting upon the Iranian people and others across the globe under an aggressive Trump administration. The board — along with most of Chicago — is wondering whether Mayor Brandon Johnson will be running for re-election. A new poll shows just 13.6% of Chicagoans want him to. Restaurateur Donnie Madia — of Publican, avec and Big Star fame — writes with gratitude about the lasting impact FX’s “The Bear” has had upon Chicago and its famed restaurant scene. Thanks for reading. Hope you have a great weekend. — Hilary Gowins, editorial board member Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | | | The problem that’s cropped up in New Jersey should trigger a wider response by the states to ensure the integrity of their voter rolls. | | | | | Chicago may have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve one of its most controversial financial transactions. | | | | | The United States is imposing pointless suffering on the people of Cuba and Iran. | | | | | City Council is making it harder for Mayor Brandon Johnson to win a second term. | | | | | The show reminded people that Chicago’s restaurants are more than just places you go out to eat.
