Dr. Rachel Zelkowitz, PhD
Dr. Rachel Zelkowitz is a clinical research psychologist at VA Boston Healthcare System in the Women’s Health Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD and is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Her research examines psychological factors that maintain self-directed violence (including nonsuicidal self-injury) and other risky behaviors in trauma-exposed individuals, with a particular focus on women Veterans. She is especially interested in the unique concerns facing women Veterans during midlife.

Effectively assessing and addressing suicide risk requires a nuanced and whole-person approach, particularly for women Veterans during midlife who may be navigating traumatic stress, menopausal changes, and psychosocial stressors. For women Veterans, these transitional challenges can interact in complex ways that should be considered when assessing and managing suicide risk.
This month’s lecture will examine these unique considerations, outlining a research agenda designed to inform more targeted clinical approaches for women Veterans in this age cohort. Attendees will take part in a discussion that reviews current data and emerging research.
